Summary
In new warm up smocks just in time for Christmas, Headley Veterans turned on the style with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Fleet Town Veterans, advancing to the quarter-finals of the Invitational Cup. This game had it all: moments of brilliance, a touch of humor, and a squad brimming with confidence and camaraderie.
From Sandeep Bacheta's early opener, Stapleton’s hat-trick, to TEMU ADIDOS - Headley demonstrated why they are a force to be reckoned with. Supported by a rock-solid defense, midfield and devastating forwards - the team delivered a relentless performance that left Fleet reeling.
First Half: Controlled Precision and Throw-In Brilliance
The game began with Headley settling into their rhythm early. The holding midfield partnership of Jason Liddle, back from his travels to Middle-Earth, and Darren Churcher as the 45-minute man (his missus would love that), was sharp and composed alongside the evergreen Oram-Tooley.
The opening goal came in the 24th minute when Paul Murphy’s laser sharp and millimeter precise assist-shot found Sandeep Bacheta, who slotted home with finesse.
Martin Buttery’s performance was a highlight of the half, particularly his two throw-ins and nutmeg. His first throw-in at 13 minutes was a masterpiece of technique, experience, aligning his knees perfectly with the pitch and smirking as he threw the ball so well. The second throw-in, nine minutes later, displayed the depth of his skill set, executed with shoulders that screamed perfection. Moments later, Buttery’s nutmeg on a bewildered Fleet defender sent the Headley fans into raptures, as he celebrated the small win like a tombola winner at the working mens club Christmas dinner.
The defensive duo of Paul Oliver and Ionut Ratoi, complemented by the adaptable Churcher, formed an impenetrable wall, conceding just one goal in four games. Dan Sleater, after a 10-minute throw-in tutorial from the management, still managed a two-yard missile straight into the grass just beyond his size 16 sledges. Buttery has already stepped up and offered him extra practice.
Travis showed moments of genius, working closely with the engine room OT. The cultured creative Caribbean found time and space in areas in and around the box, feeding Bacheta and Murphy. OT was positive in position going close with long distance efforts and continuously breaking up play.
Headley’s sniper Murphy enjoyed multiple opportunities to score, but decided against scoring as he has his eyes on the end-of-season sportsmanship award. The half ended with Headley in full control, their passing and retention leaving goalkeeper Tiger untested, despite buckling both ankles the previous week.
Second Half: Blood in the Water
The second half began with a whirlwind of activity as Headley could taste blood. The five-man rotation brought fresh legs and devastating intent. A quick combination between Milente and Parker nearly extended the lead, but the Fleet keeper made a smart save to keep the score at 1-0.
The breakthrough came in the 57th minute when Danny McGarry stole the show for 15 minutes. A perfectly timed through ball from McGarry set up Parker, whose pressure forced a mistake from the keeper and defender. The ball fell kindly for McGarry, who dispatched a stunning 40-yard lob with his size 4 Temu Adidos boots to double the lead. His boots, however, couldn’t keep up with the excitement, and McGarry left the pitch just five minutes later.
Grant Stapleton took over the scoring mantle, netting twice in quick succession. In the 68th minute, Milente found Parker, who beat two defenders before a clever pull-back from found Stapleton, who powered home with authority. His second goal came moments later, courtesy of a pinpoint cross from Simon Gordon, who had switched to left-back to relieve the man-of-the-match Buttery. Stapleton soared mid-air, heading home while injuring his hand on the post. He didn’t mention it again.
The final nail in Fleet’s coffin came in the 73rd minute. Milente’s electric pace left a defender in a different postcode before delivering a perfect cross for Stapleton to seal his hat-trick.
