Hawley Vets 1-3 Headley Veterans
Total Control on a Tough Surface

Match Report: Hawley Vets 1-3 Headley Veterans
Hampshire League | Sunday 13th April 2025
Venue: Mytchett Community Centre #1
With Chris Brown still sunning himself abroad and Graeme Oliver unavailable for family reasons, management duties fell to the ever-reliable Martin Buttery and Barry Parker. Buttery, recovering from a knock picked up last week (in a moment where he was fouled and somehow conceded a free kick), stepped aside. Parker, also nursing knocks, opted to rest and rotate, letting the squad shine—and shine they did.
First Half: Total Control on a Tough Surface
On a narrow, bobbly pitch that made fluid play difficult, Headley adapted quickly. Calm on the ball and smart in transition, the away side dictated possession with Murphy, McGarry, and Ratoi pulling the strings.
The opener came on 35’, with Paul Murphy arriving late into the box to finish confidently, assisted by Simon “Flash” Gordon, who caused chaos all game from wide areas.
At the back, Churcher, Travis Martin, Paul Oliver and Ionut Ratoi were immense—calm under pressure and sharp in distribution. Hawley barely had a sniff, and Headley went into the break 1-0 up, in full control.
Second Half: Flow and Flair
The changes came at half-time:
- Tiger (James Small) came outfield, with Murphy switching.
- Barry Parker replaced Flash.
- Larry Fifield on for Bacheta.
That trio brought a new tempo, and the breakthrough soon followed. A defence-splitting pass from Parker found Kareem Davis, who somehow managed to bounce three one-twos off the goalkeeper before finishing coolly for 2-0.
With momentum flowing, everyone rallied around Tiger to get him on the scoresheet. Sadly, he hadn’t finished his Frosties. A few chances went begging, but the spirit was clear.
The third came from none other than Flash, back on the pitch and finishing with style after a pinpoint cross from Nick Oram-Tooley. An unstoppable move.
Late Twist & PoTM McGarry
With Murphy off injured (hopefully nothing too serious), Stephen White stepped into goal. He held his own, until Hawley lobbed one from the edge of the box with a radar on White’s low centre of gravity.
The match ended 3-1, but it could’ve been more. Daniel McGarry, our Player of the Match, even hit his own post with a bizarre header-kick hybrid late on. A moment of magic that deserved a goal (just at the other end of the pitch).
Final Thoughts
Routine win. Job done.
- Paul Oliver – commanding and calm.
- Churcher – defensive general.
- Travis – rapid, no-nonsense defending.
- Ionut – everywhere, all game.
Now? All eyes on the Runwick Cup Final.
