Match Report: Headley Veterans 3-2 Rushmoor
HEADLEY BEAT UNBEATEN TOP OF THE LEAGUE RUSHMOOR AT HOMW

Headley Veterans took on Rushmoor, the undefeated league leaders.
Hampshire League Fixture – Sunday 3rd March 2025
Facing top-of-the-league, unbeaten Rushmoor Community Vets, Headley knew they were in for a battle. With five first-team regulars missing due to “fancy dress commitments,” the squad had to dig deep. And they did exactly that, producing an outstanding performance against the most dominant team in the division.
A special mention for Simon 'Flash' Gordon, who welcomed Atlas to the world earlier in the week. There was no stopping him being part of the match day squad!
First Half: An Early Setback & A Statement Response
The game barely got underway before disaster struck. Captain Barry Parker tore his groin just 30 seconds in, slipping on the bobbly pitch. Moments later, Rushmoor unleashed a 30-yard screamer into the top corner—giving Tiger in goal absolutely no chance.
Despite the pain, Parker soldiered on, knowing that beyond leading the team, he also had to wash the kit after the game. That was all the motivation needed for redemption.
Headley responded brilliantly, dominating possession and looking the more dangerous side in the early exchanges. Parker, now operating with only one groin, launched a 40-yard cross-field ball, catching the Rushmoor defense retreating. Melinte was there to pounce, smashing in the equalizer.
Moments later, Leigh Wilson showed his pace and footwork, dancing past three defenders before sending a low cross into the box. Flash Gordon met it with his size 12 boots, laying it perfectly into the path of Melinte, who slotted home his second.
The intensity was relentless. Mark Richards controlled the midfield with calmness and composure, keeping the game flowing and bringing the wide players into action. James Powe, making his first appearance in 15 years, was a rock at center-back—powerful, commanding, and only slightly let down by his haircut.
Goalkeeper James the Tiger Small had the bench scrambling after he went down after what was later discovered as 'not eating his Frosties'. Haribo became his best friend and after a tummy tickle he we roaring to go again!
At halftime, Headley led 2-1, having played some of their best football of the season against the league leaders.
Second Half: Tactical Adjustments & Late Drama
Knowing Rushmoor would throw everything forward, Chris Brown made tactical changes to add fresh energy to the attack. With the game at full intensity, Powe was withdrawn after 60 minutes to protect him for the upcoming games.
Headley’s defensive line, marshaled by Buttery, Oliver, and Ratoi, stood firm. Ionut Ratoi was everywhere, making key tackles, while Tiger produced a crucial save to maintain the lead.
As the game approached the 80th minute, Rushmoor found an equalizer from a corner, bundling the ball home in scrappy fashion. But Headley were not done.
The Last-Minute Winner
With seconds left on the clock, Headley won a corner. The delivery was half-cleared to the edge of the box, where McGarry recycled possession, picking out Parker. With only one functioning groin, Parker controlled it on his chest and volleyed a perfect ball across the face of goal.
There, waiting like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in his prime, was Larry Fifield—who reacted quickest, burying the ball into the net with what was the last kick of the game. 3-2. Full-time. Headley had done it.
This was a performance full of graft, fight, and quality, proving once again why Headley are becoming a nightmare for the league’s biggest teams. With two cup semi-finals on the horizon, this was the perfect momentum boost.
Post-Match Reaction: A Statement Win
Chris Brown post-match:
“They couldn’t handle our press or work rate. Every player grafted and did their job. By far the better side today, and that win was fully deserved.”
Parker on his redemption arc:
“I had one groin left and a washing machine waiting for me, so I had to make it count.”
Headley now turn their focus to Sunday, March 9th, at home against Ockham, a side they narrowly lost to earlier in the season after playing with nine men for 40 minutes and having two goals disallowed in a narrow 3-2 loss. Revenge is on the cards.
