Headley Veterans Battle the Bog at East Meon
Halloween Nightmare Pitch FOR THE VETS
Headley Veterans took to the field on October 27th to face East Meon on their infamous pitch - one that could be charitably described as a ‘football field’ but was closer to a marshland with long grass and uneven ground underfoot. As if to set the tone, the referee opened the game with an ominous warning, declaring, “You can’t play football on this, lads.” Undeterred, the Veterans pushed on, determined to show their style and skill despite the unfavorable conditions.
The game kicked off with Headley asserting control almost immediately. Just three minutes in, Parker threaded a perfectly timed through ball to Captain Nick Oram-Tooley, who made no mistake in front of goal. He kept his composure, slotting the ball home to give Headley a 1-0 lead. This early strike showcased the attacking intent and precision Headley aimed to bring to the match, regardless of the pitch’s limitations.
But East Meon, accustomed to the challenges of their home turf, retaliated with swift counterattacks. In the 10th minute, they equalized against the run of play, capitalising on a rare moment of disarray in Headley’s defense as James Small found himself off-balance in the goalmouth. East Meon struck again just ten minutes later, taking a 2-1 lead with another scrappy effort. Fortunately, that was the last time East Meon would pose any real threat, as Headley’s defense settled and denied the hosts another shot on target for the rest of the match.
Despite the pitch working against them, Headley Veterans continued to press forward. Stapleton, playing in a more advanced striker role, put in a stellar performance, displaying strength and determination in attack. In the 38th minute, he equalized with a powerful finish, following a slick sequence of passes orchestrated by Darren Churcher, Daniel McGarry, and Paul Murphy in midfield. This combination play, a hallmark of Headley’s style, was impressive under the circumstances and highlighted the quality in Headley’s squad.
Headley’s back four remained steadfast, with Ionut Ratoi, Dan Sleater, Paul Oliver, and Martin Buttery anchoring the defense. Buttery, displaying his characteristic physicality, accidentally elbowed Parker in the 11th minute but managed to laugh it off, further emphasising the camaraderie within the squad, Parker later enjoyed his roast dinner via a straw.
In the second half, Headley Veterans dominated, peppering the East Meon goal with relentless pressure. Hitting the post three time, rattling the bar, and forcing East Meon’s keeper into multiple saves. The visitors pushed forward with energy and intent, but the unforgiving pitch slowly drained their stamina and hampered the execution of their usual passing game. By the end, the heavy conditions had proved to be the match’s true winner, as the field itself robbed Headley of a well-deserved victory.
Looking ahead, Headley’s bye in the League Cup against Eversley and California Vets will offer a much-needed breather for the squad. They’ll regroup, recover, and prepare to welcome Bourne Casuals to Headley Sports Pavilion on November 17th, where they’ll be hoping for a proper football pitch to do justice to their style and ability.
Co-Manager Chris Brown added his comments after the game;
' How that’s ended 2-2 boys I’ll never know.Lady Luck just wasn’t on our side today. We created some great opportunities and just couldn’t find the back of the net '
