HEADLEY VETERANS KICK START THEIR CAMPAIGN WITH A DOMINATING PERFORMANCE.
Match Report: Beacon Hill 2-6 Headley Veterans – Pre-Season Friendly
Kick-Off: 10:30 AM, Sunday 18th August 2024
Venue: Playing Fields, Beacon Hill, Hindhead GU26 6RF
Headley Veterans kicked off their pre-season campaign with a resounding 6-2 victory over Beacon Hill on Sunday morning, setting the tone for the season ahead with a performance full of promise and attacking flair. The match marked the debut of new player managers Barry Parker and Chris Brown, who saw their new-look squad execute fresh tactics with confidence and energy.
From the opening whistle, Headley looked sharp, pushing forward with intent and creating early chances. Player-manager Parker found himself in goal-scoring positions on several occasions, but Beacon Hill’s keeper kept him at bay with a series of impressive saves. Despite the missed opportunities, Headley’s determination never wavered, and it wasn’t long before they broke the deadlock.
There was a stellar defensive performance from left-back Martin Buttery, who, while consistent throughout the game, inadvertently kept his standards high by scoring an own goal late into teh second-half. But with strong defensive work in his new position at left center-back, there was little to complain about.
Meanwhile, Brian ‘Woody’ Wood delivered a solid first-half performance, capped off by a crucial assist - impacting the game, this was despite some pre-match concerns about his hairstyle for the team photo (very questionable fringe).
As the game progressed, 30 minutes in, Danny McGarry joined the fray with Headley leading 1-0. His energy was displayed as he delivered early acrobatics in his own box attempting to close down a player. He soon showed his natural agility and ability for the game and injected even more dynamism into the squad.
Larry Fifield, casually netting a hat-trick, feeding off excellent team play and smart assists, while Sandy and Parker added to the tally with goals in each half - Parker, taking two well-taken goals, one from a tight angle, chipping the keeper like an Olympian sniper.
The debutants, Ionut and Marius, impressed throughout the match, showcasing their ability to control possession and link up play. Ionut, in particular, provided an assist that led to one of Larry Fifield’s three goals, while Marius (nicknamed 'Mario') showed his creativity in attack, his pace and energy on the ball was infectious that also contributed to an assist.
The defence had a great feel to it and allowed player manager Chris Brown to dictate play from between the sticks. Opening up quick interchanges of play and booming kicks into the next village.
Grant Stapleton was a constant threat on the right wing in the second half, his quick feet and relentless work rate opening up goal-scoring opportunities for the team. James ‘Tiger’ Small also made an appearance late in the game, even taking a brief stint as goalkeeper after player-manager Chris Brown tweaked his knee picking up his water bottle.
Paul Murphy was as reliable as ever, directing play from midfield and frequently setting up attacks down the flanks. Graham Ollie, unfortunately, had a short-lived debut, pulling a calf muscle just 31 minutes in and now facing a 4-6 week recovery.
Captain Nick 'OT' put in a tireless 75 minutes, helping to marshal the team from midfield before being rested after a slight niggle picked up during training earlier in the week. His leadership on the pitch was instrumental in keeping the side focused and organised.
Darren Churcher and Simon Gordon, now starting their first full season with the veterans, added class and composure to the team’s play, Darren demonstrating his ability to control the tempo of the game and Flash providing an outlet and constant threat on the wing.
Ultra-Veteran Paul 'oli' Oliver, at 51, showed why he has been a persistent face in the veterans squad for so many years. A dominant 60 minutes that showcases his versatility, playing in three positions.
Overall, it was a positive and constructive outing for Headley Veterans, with the squad embracing a new professional approach under their fresh management. The new "Keep Attacking" kit added an extra layer of professionalism and unity, helping to build momentum for the upcoming season.
It was a real compliment, that the Beacon Hill XI has some youth players in their squad. It allowed for a more intense challenging fixture. With Headley still awaiting players still to come ack into the squad after their extended summer break (after the Euro's) including Leigh Wilson and Steve Graham the dynamic look and feel of today's win, will drive belief for the upcoming season into every player involved.
As the Veterans look ahead to their tournament at Ropley on 1st September, they can take many positives from this performance, knowing they’ve laid the foundation for a successful season ahead.
