Top Three Finish for the Vets
THIRD PLACE FINISH FOR HEADLEY VETERANS IN THEIR PRE-SEASON TOUR OF ROPLEY.
Headley Veterans Secure 3rd Place Finish in Ropley Tournament on Goal Difference
The Headley Veterans put on a commendable performance at the Ropley Tournament, finishing in 3rd place based on goal difference, showing their mettle against some formidable opposition. The squad, managed by Barry Parker and Chris Brown, delivered some standout moments throughout the tournament, proving they are a team to be reckoned with in the upcoming 95th season in veterans' football.
The tournament began on a high note with a commanding 4-0 victory over Ropley Reserves. Larry Field opened the scoring, followed by goals from Marius Milente and Nick O-T, setting the tone for what looked to be a successful campaign.
Headley’s second match was nothing short of ruthless as they dismantled Farnham Mavericks 10-0. The team was firing on all cylinders, with every player contributing to a dominant performance that saw the opposition left with no answers.
However, the tournament took an emotional turn when two players, Dan Sleater and Simon "Flash" Gordon, had to depart before the final league game. Sleater, a club sponsor, played his first-ever 11-a-side game in 20 years, while Gordon attended a memorial tournament in honour of a friend lost to cancer.
Despite the departures, Headley maintained their high spirits and strong team dynamic going into their final league fixture against a combined Isle of Wight XI that included Ropley 1st Team Saturday league players. The match was a tense affair, with both sides creating chances. Unfortunately, controversy struck when Darren Churcher was shown a red card for a "Hand of God" style handball, leaving Headley down to 10 men. The match was decided in the final minutes when the Isle of Wight XI capitalised when bundling a ball through and scuffing a shot in the near post, scoring the only goal of the game and handing Headley a frustrating 1-0 loss.
Despite the defeat, Headley advanced as league runners-up, setting up a semi-final clash against AFC Stoneham. AFC Stoneham, undefeated in the veterans' premiership last season, undefeated in the tournament and brimming with ex-high level players, posed a significant threat. A one-hour delay before the match for lunch allowed enough time for the players to seize up, making the challenge even more daunting.
Moving to a new larger pitch for the fixture was also another mindset adaptation for the tiring Headley veterans. After 15 minutes of solid defensive midfield and attacking work it was 0-0 at half time. At the switch of ends, Hadley once again started strongest, dominating play and being the most likely to score. It was only from a defensive mixup between Tiger and Churcher when the AFC Stoneham striker pounced on the loose ball for an easy tap in. Headley Veterans, though tired and with only one available substitute, rose to the occasion. The match was closely contested, with Headley showing their defensive strength, midfield tenacity and attacking prowess. Headley continued to dominate deep into the second half, despite their best efforts, Headley couldn't find an equaliser and were narrowly defeated against the premier league champions.
Lot's of positives.
Finishing third on goal difference, with 14 goals scored and only two conceded, Headley Veterans can hold their heads high. The team demonstrated their ability to compete at a high level and showed great resilience and unity throughout the tournament. With debut's handed out to Dan Sleater and Travis 'julez' Martin the squad was full of energy and showcased what the fourth tier in Veterans football in the Farnham & District Sunday Football League can look forward to this coming season.
Managers Barry Parker and Chris Brown praised the squad, stating,
"We have curated a great bunch of players who all share the same positive mindset for Veterans Football. Everyone today showed exactly why they are part of the squad, with everyone showing what they can bring.”
They added,
"Proud would be an understatement for today’s efforts."
Looking ahead, Parker and Brown emphasised the importance of squad depth, especially with six first-team players unable to attend the tournament. This depth will be crucial as Headley Veterans prepare for the upcoming season, which kicks off this Sunday, September 7th, at home against Odiham Crocs (10:30 am KO).
The Headley Veterans have set the stage for a promising season, and with the determination and quality shown in the Ropley Tournament, they are poised to achieve great things.
